HERMOS develops and implements automation and IT solutions for systems in the fields of energy generation as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. HERMOS provides everything from sensors and actuators from well-known manufacturers, automation stations (from Beckhoff, Saia, Siemens and Wago, etc.) to HERMOS’ own management and operation system level, FIS#. Energy use is monitored using the HERMOS energy data management system, FIS#energy.
Scalable, open, flexible and certified: FIS#energy
FIS#energy is an efficient system based on standard components and open technologies. It supports all common interfaces, can be adapted to customer requirements and structures, and is certified by the German technical inspection association, TÜV Süd, to comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 50001.
In conjunction with the construction of a new building for switchgear production, HERMOS installed an up-to-date energy supply system at the company’s site in Mistelgau. Apart from supplying our own needs, the Energy Control Centre is used for the purpose of researching the technical and economic aspects of system concepts using various different energy converters, storage systems and distribution systems. Based on consumption requirements and price developments to be expected on the energy market in the future, we are developing economically-appropriate and environmentally-sustainable operating modes to provide thermal and electric energy.

The heat pumps can be used for both heating and cooling. The CHP is heat-controlled and operates in parallel with the mains network. The heat is used directly to heat the building. Two heat accumulators of 5 m³ are available for energy storage purposes. The power generated is primarily used for on-site consumption. Thermal peak loads are covered by a gas condensing boiler with liquefied gas.
Beckhoff type CX2030 automation stations are used to control and regulate all the components. The entire periphery communicates via the EtherCAT bus system. The parameters needed to operate the system are illustrated on the overarching HERMOS management and operation level FIS#. The integration of weather forecasts allows the proactive and coordinated management of the energy converters and storage systems. All the electrical and thermal consumption of the aggregates in the joint system is captured by meters which are connected by M-bus to FIS# for data evaluation.
A FIS#client with a Beckhoff CP2919 multi-touch panel is available to operate and observe the system. Visual effects ensure that the system constellation currently generating energy is clearly visible to the operator. A partial technical data server (PTDS) records and pre-processes the data on site. The PTDS is connected to the central management server of the FIS# system at Mistelgau by fibre optic cable.
The Energy Centre set up by HERMOS at the Mistelgau location provides a greater security of supply of electricity and thermal energy. The 400 kWp PV system and storage facility installed compensate for any short-term power failures.
The system constellation created allows the optimised modes of operation from different generation systems to be tested together. The Energy Centre used for research and development provides a productive industrial and office property. This guarantees the degree of viability and the technical and economic practicality of the innovative solutions developed.
The research and development process is based on a highly-flexible, manufacturer-neutral automation solution. The FIS# management system is used to operate and monitor the system, to evaluate the data and to optimise the relevant system configurations. The associated analytical reports and assessment reports are disclosed to customers and interested parties. By using its Energy Centre for demonstration and research purposes, HERMOS is making a vital contribution to the development of economically appropriate strategies – and thus to the energy revolution – by making use of regenerative energies.
